Choosing the best photo

When you are choosing a photo for your portrait, consider these qualities:

  • Select a pose that is pleasing. This is the most important element. A great pose makes a great painting.

  • Choose a photo that is crisp, clear, and up close to the subject. This way I can pick up on all the details.

  • Don't worry too much about background elements, logos, blemishes, etc. I usually paint these elements out so they don't distract from the subject. Of course, if there are items you want, please let me know and I will be happy to leave them in.

  • Still not sure which is the best photo? Send several and I will help you choose the best one.

  • Some photographs that have been taken by a commercial photographer may be copyrighted. (They will be marked as such.) This means I can not duplicate them without a written release from the photographer.

The Process

I will normally crop your image for the best composition. This makes for a more intimate painting. If you want your image a certain way or not cropped at all please let me know. As I'm working I will send you photos of the work in progress so you can see how things are going.

All watercolor portraits will be painted using the finest quality Arches, acid-free, museum-quality paper. All acrylic paintings will be painted on stretched museum canvas.

Your painting will be completed in 4-6 weeks, depending on my workload.
